Varanasi Experiences Minor Relief After Intense Heatwave, But Temperatures Remain Elevated

Varanasi, which had been the hottest city in Uttar Pradesh for two consecutive days with temperatures soaring to a blistering 44°C, witnessed a slight decrease in the mercury on Tuesday. The maximum temperature dropped to 42.4°C, offering some respite from the extreme conditions.

Night Temperatures Rise, Adding to Discomfort

However, this daytime relief was partially offset by an increase in night temperatures. The minimum temperature climbed from 24.5°C to 25.2°C, making nighttime conditions warmer and less comfortable for residents. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), despite the dip to 42.4°C, the temperature remains significantly above normal—specifically, 2.7 units higher than the expected average for this time of year.

Previous Days Marked by Extreme Heat

On Monday, Varanasi recorded 44°C for the second straight day, solidifying its position as Uttar Pradesh's second hottest location. This reading was a staggering 4.8 notches above the normal temperature, highlighting the severity of the heatwave. The night provided little comfort, with temperatures settling at 24.5°C, which was still 2.1 degrees above the typical nighttime average.

Harsh Conditions Prompt Administrative Measures

The sun's rays have become intense within just two hours of sunrise, creating increasingly oppressive and difficult living conditions. In response to this escalating heat, the district administration took decisive action on Monday night. They announced a reduction in school hours for students up to Class 8 to protect them from the peak heat of the day.

The Basic Education Officer has issued directives requiring classes for these younger students to conclude by 11:30 am. This measure aims to minimize exposure to the dangerous midday temperatures and ensure student safety.

Municipal Corporation Deploys Cooling Solutions

To assist the public, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation has implemented practical interventions. They have installed water coolers and traditional drinking water stations, known as pyaau, at 39 strategic locations throughout the city. These installations are intended to provide much-needed hydration for passers-by and help prevent heat-related illnesses.

Impact on Daily Life and Public Activity

The persistent and severe heat has significantly disrupted normal daily routines in Varanasi. Roads and marketplaces are largely deserted during the afternoon hours, as residents avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure. People are venturing out only for essential tasks, reflecting the community's adaptation to the challenging weather conditions.

The combination of high daytime temperatures, warmer nights, and intense sunlight has created a comprehensive heat stress situation, prompting both governmental and municipal responses to safeguard public health and maintain essential services.
