Uttarakhand Weather Update: IMD Issues Orange Alert for Thunderstorms and Hail
Intermittent showers across the hill and foothill regions of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun, brought temperatures down on Sunday, offering temporary relief from the rising heat. Light rain was reported in several districts such as Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Tehri Garhwal.
IMD Forecasts Widespread Rainfall and Snowfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall between Sunday and Tuesday. This weather activity will be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30–50 kmph. Similar conditions are expected again on Friday and Saturday.
The IMD has also warned of isolated hailstorms on Monday, particularly in higher-altitude districts. Officials stated that the current weather pattern is being driven by active western disturbances over northwest India, resulting in increased moisture and unstable weather conditions.
Orange Alert Issued for Multiple Districts
The regional meteorological centre has issued an orange alert for Monday, cautioning about thunderstorms with lightning, hail, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph at isolated locations. The alert covers Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh districts.
In higher reaches, especially areas above 3,300 metres, districts such as Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh may receive rain and snowfall. Other hilly areas may witness scattered rainfall, while plains regions, including Dehradun, are expected to see light showers.
Impact on Neighbouring States
Neighbouring states such as Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh are also likely to experience similar weather conditions. The IMD said conditions are expected to gradually improve by the end of the coming week, though intermittent rainfall may continue, keeping temperatures relatively low.
Key Points:
- Active western disturbances are causing increased moisture and unstable weather in Uttarakhand.
- An orange alert is in effect for Monday, highlighting risks of thunderstorms, hail, and strong winds.
- Higher-altitude areas may see snowfall, while plains receive light showers.
