Uttarakhand Forest Fires Brought Under Control, IAF Helicopter Remains on Standby
Forest officials in Uttarakhand have confirmed that the recent forest fires in the Valley of Flowers forest range are now under control. The fires occurred within the protected area of the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve. Authorities have taken decisive action to manage the situation effectively.
IAF Helicopter Positioned for Possible Aerial Support
The Indian Air Force deployed a Mi-17 V5 helicopter on Thursday to conduct an aerial survey of the affected region. Central Air Command officials stated that the chopper is currently positioned in firefighting mode at Joshimath. This strategic placement allows for rapid response if needed.
Chamoli divisional forest officer Sarvesh Dubey provided clarification regarding the helicopter's role. He explained that the chopper is stationed at the Jyotirmath helipad. It will only be deployed if the state government decides that aerial firefighting operations become necessary. The IAF helicopter serves as a precautionary measure, ready for immediate action.
Ground Team Successfully Reaches Inaccessible Terrain
A dedicated thirteen-member team from the state forest department undertook a challenging mission. They crossed the Lakshman Ganga river to reach Bhyundar II Beat, located opposite Pulna village. Their objective was to control the fire in this remote and difficult Himalayan area.
Officials on the ground discovered that the fire had rolled downhill. It was primarily limited to smouldering old and fallen trees. This containment prevented a wider spread, allowing the team to focus their efforts effectively.
Natural Factors Helped Prevent Fire Spread
Officials from the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve highlighted how local conditions aided fire control efforts. The area's northern aspect and dense forest cover played crucial roles. These factors helped retain moisture in the environment, which naturally hindered the fire from spreading further.
An official from the reserve provided an update on the current status. He stated that most of the fire has been successfully extinguished. However, smoke continues to rise from a few remaining stumps. Authorities assure the public that these last embers will be controlled soon.

Meanwhile, Uttarakhand maintains its unfortunate position as the state with the highest number of forest fire alerts. The Forest Survey of India regularly issues these alerts, highlighting the ongoing vulnerability of the region's forests to fire incidents.
