Unseasonal Rain and Hailstorms Wreak Havoc Across Saurashtra and Kutch
In a dramatic shift from scorching heat, unseasonal rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms lashed the Saurashtra and Kutch regions of Gujarat on Thursday, catching residents off guard and causing widespread disruption.
Urban Areas Grapple with Sudden Deluge
The sudden weather change brought heavy rainfall and hailstorms to key urban centers including Rajkot, Jamnagar, Morbi, Porbandar, and Junagadh, as well as parts of Kutch. In Rajkot, rain began shortly after 3 PM, quickly leading to waterlogging on major roads such as Yagnik Road, Kalawad Road, Raiya Road, and Madhapar. Hailstones were reported at Raiya Road and near the old airport road, with videos of the event circulating widely on social media platforms.
Many residents described the conditions as resembling a mini cyclone, with strong winds uprooting numerous trees across the city. This resulted in damaged vehicles and blocked roads, prompting civic teams to be deployed for clearance operations. In areas like Punitnagar and Kothariya, videos shared online showed solar panels being ripped off high-rise buildings, highlighting the intensity of the winds.
Rural Regions and Infrastructure Impact
The impact extended to rural areas, with places like Paddhadhri, Jivapar, Visaman, Jetpur, and Dhoraji also receiving significant rainfall. Market yards advised farmers to delay bringing in their produce for a few days due to the high risk of damage. Infrastructure suffered as well, with electricity poles damaged in Jetpur and Jamnagar, leading to power outages that affected local communities.
In Devbhumi Dwarka district, heavy rain and strong winds were reported in Kalyanpur, Raval, Khambhaliya, and Salaya. Jamnagar experienced dust storms preceding the rain in many locations, while Porbandar, Junagadh, and various parts of Kutch, including Rapar, Mundra, Kandla, and Bhuj, saw rainfall since Wednesday night, with dust storms noted in the rann areas.
Severe Crop Damage Reported
The unseasonal weather has had a devastating effect on agriculture, particularly damaging crops at a critical time. In Junagadh district, heavy rain and hailstorms were recorded in Bhesan, Vanthli, and Keshod, with some villages in Bhesan specifically reporting hailstorms. Similar conditions were observed in Amreli and Botad districts.
Mango crops have been especially hard-hit, as this period marks the ripening phase on trees in areas like Vanthli, Junagadh, Bhesan, and Keshod. Strong winds and rain caused many half-ripe mangoes to fall, resulting in substantial financial losses for farmers. Other crops, including wheat, chickpea, and cumin, have also suffered damage, compounding the agricultural distress in the region.
This unexpected weather event underscores the vulnerability of both urban and rural areas to sudden climatic changes, with authorities and communities now assessing the full extent of the damage and working towards recovery efforts.
