Tripura Installs Advanced Doppler Radar for Better Forecasts

Tripura has embarked on a significant upgrade to its meteorological infrastructure by securing a cutting-edge X-Band Doppler Weather Radar. This acquisition marks a pivotal move to bolster the state's capabilities in weather prediction and disaster management.

A Technological Leap for Real-Time Monitoring

The newly acquired radar system is a technological marvel designed to provide real-time surveillance of severe weather phenomena. It will cover a substantial radius of approximately 100 kilometers, enabling meteorologists to track and analyze developing weather patterns with high precision. The radar's primary function will be to monitor heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and cyclones, offering crucial lead time for authorities and citizens to prepare.

The state government, in collaboration with the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has finalized the necessary land lease agreements for the radar's installation. The formal ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday. Officials have announced that the system is expected to become operational before the upcoming pre-monsoon season, ensuring its benefits are realized during a critical period for weather-related hazards.

Building on an Expanding Network

This advanced radar is not an isolated effort but part of a broader expansion of Tripura's weather observation network. Currently, the state relies on 34 district-level rain gauges and 28 automated weather stations. Plans are already in motion to add 14 more automated stations to this network. Looking further ahead, from 2026, the scope of rainfall monitoring is set to expand down to the block level, ensuring even more granular data collection across the state.

The Tripura meteorological centre has shown consistent improvement over the past decade. It has successfully increased its forecast accuracy rate to over 40%, a notable achievement that signifies a shift from its earlier primary focus on aviation-related forecasts to comprehensive public weather services.

Transforming Forecasts for Farmers and Communities

The ultimate vision driving this technological infusion is hyper-local and actionable weather intelligence. The IMD has set an ambitious goal to provide detailed forecasts at the Panchayat level. This granularity of information is poised to be a game-changer, especially for the agricultural community.

Farmers will gain access to precise, location-specific forecasts regarding rain, storms, and other weather parameters, allowing them to make informed decisions about sowing, irrigation, and harvesting. This initiative directly links advanced technology with grassroots economic and safety needs, aiming to minimize crop loss and enhance livelihood security.
