TISS, Maharashtra Launch Climate Project in Raigad

The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) has joined forces with the Maharashtra government to launch a new climate action project in Raigad district. This significant partnership aims to address local environmental challenges through a gender-responsive approach.

Official Launch at TISS National Seminar

The project officially launched during a two-day national seminar hosted at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences campus. The seminar carried the title "Pathways to Gender-Responsive Local Climate Action and Justice: Localizing SDGs, Decolonizing Governance, Indigenizing Knowledge."

Focus on Local Climate Solutions

This collaborative initiative will concentrate on developing practical climate solutions tailored specifically for Raigad district. The project emphasizes gender-responsive strategies, ensuring that climate actions consider the unique needs and roles of women and other marginalized groups in the community.

Key objectives include localizing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to make them more relevant and actionable at the district level. The project also seeks to decolonize governance structures by incorporating local perspectives and decision-making processes.

Incorporating Indigenous Knowledge

A crucial aspect of this initiative involves indigenizing knowledge systems. The project will document and integrate traditional ecological knowledge from local communities in Raigad. This approach recognizes the value of indigenous practices in sustainable resource management and climate adaptation.

The Maharashtra government brings its administrative expertise and local governance networks to this partnership. Meanwhile, TISS contributes its research capabilities and experience in social development projects. Together, they aim to create a model for climate action that other districts might replicate.

This collaboration represents a significant step toward addressing climate challenges at the grassroots level in Maharashtra. By combining academic research with government implementation, the project hopes to achieve tangible improvements in climate resilience for Raigad communities.

The launch event featured discussions among climate experts, government officials, and community representatives. Participants explored various approaches to making climate action more inclusive and effective at the local level. The seminar provided a platform for sharing best practices and developing implementation strategies for the Raigad project.
