Telangana Emerges as National Leader in E-Waste Management
Hyderabad: Telangana has solidified its position as a powerhouse in environmental sustainability, ranking as India's second-largest e-waste recycling state according to official government data. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change presented comprehensive statistics in the Lok Sabha revealing Telangana's remarkable achievements in electronic waste processing.
Record-Breaking Recycling Performance
The state recycled an impressive 1.6 lakh metric tonnes of e-waste during the 2025-26 fiscal year, representing approximately 16% of India's total e-waste processing capacity. This accomplishment becomes even more significant when examining the state's growth trajectory over recent years.
Telangana has demonstrated extraordinary progress with a nearly 400% increase in e-waste recycling, soaring from 42,000 metric tonnes in 2021-22 to the current 1.6 lakh metric tonnes. This growth occurred despite a challenging national context where India experienced a 15% decline in overall e-waste recycling during the same period.
Even more remarkably, Telangana continued its upward momentum with a 35% year-over-year increase from 1.19 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25 to the current 1.6 lakh metric tonnes in 2025-26, defying broader industry trends.
Efficient Operations with Limited Infrastructure
What makes Telangana's achievement particularly noteworthy is the efficiency demonstrated despite relatively modest infrastructure. The state operates with just 19 dedicated recycling units, while other states like Karnataka maintain 33 recycling centers but process significantly lower volumes at approximately 27,000 metric tonnes.
This efficiency highlights Telangana's optimized operational model and effective resource utilization in the e-waste management sector.
Driving Forces Behind the Success
Officials from the Telangana Pollution Control Board attribute this remarkable growth to several key factors:
- Active participation from IT companies operating within the state
- Rapid expansion of electronics manufacturing including mobile device producers and original equipment manufacturers establishing operations in Telangana
- Proactive e-waste policy framework that has attracted significant investment and strengthened recycling capacity
A senior environment engineer at TGPCB explained, "The state's forward-thinking approach to e-waste management has created an environment conducive to investment and innovation. We have established an expert committee comprising scientists from prestigious institutions including IICT, NIT, and JNTUH to study e-waste trends and enhance management systems. This scientific approach has already generated interest from multiple investors exploring new recycling unit installations."
National Context and Regulatory Framework
At the national level, India's e-waste management ecosystem includes 386 registered recyclers listed on the Extended Producer Responsibility portal. These facilities collectively possess an annual recycling capacity exceeding 34.6 lakh metric tonnes distributed across 19 states and Union territories.
The Central Pollution Control Board manages an online EPR portal that mandates registration for all stakeholders including producers, manufacturers, recyclers, and refurbishers. Under the comprehensive E-Waste (Management) Rules of 2022, these entities bear responsibility for:
- Creating public awareness about proper e-waste disposal
- Encouraging consumers to utilize authorized recycling channels
- Ensuring safer and more sustainable recycling practices throughout the value chain
Telangana's success story demonstrates how targeted policy interventions, industry collaboration, and efficient operations can transform environmental challenges into opportunities for sustainable development and economic growth.
