Firefighting operations at the Khajod waste disposal site in Surat have now extended beyond 24 hours, with authorities still working to fully contain the persistent blaze. Challenging Terrain Complicates Firefighting Efforts
Officials have described the operation as particularly challenging due to the vast expanse of accumulated waste and uneven terrain that severely restricts the movement of fire tenders. To access smouldering pockets buried deep within the waste heaps, the Surat Municipal Corporation has deployed earth movers and hydraulic excavators. However, the difficult surface conditions have hampered progress, with some machinery developing faults while attempting to navigate the treacherous mounds.
Substantial Resources Deployed Against the Blaze
Approximately 50 personnel from the Surat Fire and Emergency Services, supported by 10 fire engines and additional specialized equipment, remain engaged in the ongoing operation. Firefighting teams are employing a multi-pronged approach, including covering waste with soil to contain the blaze and prevent further spread to unaffected areas.
"The fire is not completely under control," a fire official stated. "Though we have managed to reduce its intensity, it may flare up again due to wind conditions."
Refuse-Derived Fuel Accelerates Fire Spread
According to civic authorities, preliminary investigations suggest the blaze originated in Refuse-Derived Fuel (RDF) stored at the site. The highly inflammable nature of RDF, combined with strong winds, allowed the fire to spread rapidly. The flames subsequently extended to surrounding solid waste, significantly widening the affected area and complicating containment efforts.
