Major Fire Erupts at Surat's Khajod Waste Disposal Facility
Thick, billowing clouds of smoke over the Surat Diamond Bourse on Tuesday afternoon signaled a serious emergency at the nearby Khajod waste disposal site. A substantial fire had ignited in stockpiles of refuse-derived fuel (RDF) stored at the dumping ground, with strong winds causing it to spread rapidly across approximately two square kilometers of area.

Twelve firefighting vehicles and teams from the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) were immediately deployed to the scene. Despite their efforts, the blaze remained uncontained into the late evening hours. The dense smoke plume was visible from several kilometers away, generating significant concern among citizens throughout the city.
Within minutes, videos capturing the massive smoke column began circulating widely across social media platforms. Residents of surrounding neighborhoods and workers in the vicinity of the Surat Diamond Bourse expressed particular alarm at both the scale and intensity of the smoke emissions.
Nature of the Fuel and Fire Spread
According to SMC officials, the fire originated specifically within the refuse-derived fuel stored at the Khajod site. RDF is manufactured from segregated municipal waste and supplied to various industries as an alternative fuel source. Officials emphasized that this material is highly flammable, and the strong winds present on Tuesday played a crucial role in the fire's rapid expansion across the large storage area.
Firefighters and municipal workers employed a strategy of dumping soil around the perimeter of the affected sections in an attempt to create firebreaks and halt further spread. "The firefighting operation is ongoing, and due to the extensive area involved, it is expected to continue for some time," stated an official from the Surat Fire and Emergency Services (SFES).
Investigation into the Cause
The exact cause of the ignition remains undetermined at this stage. An SMC official provided insight into the investigation, noting, "It is highly improbable for an individual to climb onto the waste mound and deliberately start a fire. The most likely scenarios involve spontaneous combustion of some flammable material due to the intense summer heat, or a chemical reaction occurring within the waste pile itself."
