Heavy Rainfall Plunges Punjab and Haryana Temperatures Below Normal
For the second consecutive day, heavy rainfall has battered parts of Punjab and Haryana, leading to a dramatic and sharp drop in temperatures across the region. The persistent showers have resulted in maximum temperatures hovering significantly below their normal seasonal limits, creating unseasonably cool conditions.
Chandigarh Records Ten Notches Below Normal
According to the Meteorological (MeT) Department, Chandigarh experienced rainfall throughout Friday, causing the maximum temperature to plummet to 18.8 degrees Celsius. This reading is a staggering ten notches below the normal expected temperature for this time of year, highlighting the intensity of the weather system affecting the area.
Widespread Rainfall Across Both States
The rain was not confined to Chandigarh alone. Numerous other locations in Punjab and Haryana reported significant precipitation. In Punjab, key cities such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, and Rupnagar were among those receiving showers. Similarly, in Haryana, areas including Ambala, Panchkula, Narnaul, Rohtak, Hisar, and Karnal experienced the downpour.
Detailed Temperature Observations
The rainfall has led to a consistent pattern of below-normal temperatures across the board:
- Punjab: Amritsar recorded a maximum of 23.7°C (four notches below normal), Ludhiana saw 21.6°C (seven degrees below normal), and Patiala registered 20.3°C (nine notches below normal).
- Haryana: Ambala's high was 18.5°C (ten degrees below normal), Hisar reached 22.2°C (seven notches below normal), and Karnal settled at 22.2°C (over six degrees below normal).
This weather event follows similar conditions on Thursday, where rain in many parts of both states also caused temperatures to drop sharply. The continuation of rainfall into Friday has exacerbated the cooling effect, with maximum temperatures again registering a significant decline compared to seasonal averages.
The MeT Department's data underscores the widespread impact of this weather system, which has brought relief from heat but also uncharacteristically cool temperatures to the region. Residents are advised to stay updated with local weather forecasts as conditions evolve.
