A fierce and unexpected two-hour rainstorm lashed Pune on Thursday afternoon, unleashing chaos across the city with severe waterlogging, crippling traffic jams, and widespread power failures. The intense spell proved fatal in the Parvati area, where a 60-year-old flower vendor, Ranjana Navnath Giri, lost her life after a tree collapsed on her near Navshya Maruti Mandir around 3:30 pm. Two other individuals sustained minor injuries in the tragic incident.
Record-Breaking Rainfall Shatters Century-Old Mark
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed that Shivajinagar recorded a staggering 65mm of rainfall in nearly two hours, marking the highest daily April rainfall since 1896. The previous record stood at 51.1 mm on April 4, 1896, making Thursday's deluge a historic weather event for the city.
Independent forecaster Abhijit Modak explained the meteorological factors behind the unprecedented downpour: "Thursday's record-breaking April rainfall over Pune was driven by lower-level wind convergence, further enhanced by upper-level divergence ahead of an approaching southward-dipping western disturbance trough. This set-up promoted rapid uplift of warm air, while moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea provided the necessary fuel, resulting in intense convective activity."
Widespread Impact Across City Neighborhoods
Rainfall measurements revealed the storm's intensity varied across Pune:
- NDA recorded the highest at 84mm, affecting areas like Pashan, Bavdhan, and Kothrud.
- Shivajinagar followed with 65mm.
- Hadapsar received 42.5mm.
- Other significant readings included Pashan (36.3mm), Dapodi (29mm), and Chinchwad (28.5mm).
The heavy rains triggered severe flooding, with visuals showing vehicles partially submerged on major roads and commuters wading through knee-deep water. In numerous locations, motorists were forced to push stalled cars as streets transformed into rushing streams within minutes.
Transportation and Infrastructure Severely Disrupted
The storm's impact extended across Pune's transportation networks and infrastructure:
- Flight Operations: An IndiGo Ahmedabad-Pune flight (6E-522) was diverted to Goa, with several other flights experiencing significant delays.
- Traffic Chaos: Waterlogging slowed traffic to a crawl on multiple stretches, including the Solapur highway and Magarpatta Road. A boundary wall collapsed along Baner Road, while compound walls gave way in Ravet and on NIBM Road.
- Transport Availability: Cab and autorickshaw services became virtually unavailable across the city. At Pune airport, passengers faced major difficulties securing transportation as vehicles remained stuck in traffic elsewhere.
Prakash Rajguru, an autorickshaw driver, highlighted the transport crisis: "No autorickshaw was available at the airport as all were stuck in traffic in different places because of the rain." Sources at AeroMall confirmed minimal cab movements for the same reason.
Emergency Response and Power Outages
Emergency teams were deployed throughout Pune to manage the aftermath, with approximately 20 fire engines, two rescue vans, and nearly 100 personnel engaged in clearing uprooted trees and handling related incidents.
Power supply was severely affected in multiple areas including Kondhwa, Kothrud, Hadapsar, and Dhayari. The outages disrupted work during peak evening hours, compounding the day's challenges for residents and businesses alike.
