Prayagraj: Sangam City continued to reel under intense heat wave conditions as the mercury soared to around 45.6 degrees Celsius on Sunday, forcing citizens to stay indoors to avoid the scorching heat. The city remained second on the chart, with Orai and Jhansi also recording a maximum temperature of 45.6 degrees Celsius. Banda, at 46.8 degrees Celsius, continued to remain the hottest in Uttar Pradesh.
Weather Forecast and Impact
Weather experts predicted that heat wave conditions would continue over the next few days. Intense sunshine throughout the day until evening hours made it difficult to move out. Residents noted that the summer vacation had offered some respite to students and parents alike. City streets and markets wore a deserted look, partly because it was Sunday, and there was thin attendance at the Sangam as well.
“Dry, scorching winds and relentless heat turned Sangam city into a furnace on Sunday as maximum temperatures breached the 45 degrees Celsius mark. Now the city is staring at an extended spell of punishing heat in the upcoming week,” said Vinay Mehrotra, a resident.
IMD Warning and Precautions
On Sunday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast heatwave conditions in Prayagraj, placing the city under a red alert and advising residents to “remain updated.” The Sachet app has predicted severe heat waves in several districts of eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Banda, Bhadohi, Chandauli, Chitrakoot, Fatehpur, Kaushambi, Mirzapur, Pratapgarh, Prayagraj, and Varanasi for the next 24 hours.
Acknowledging the severe heat wave conditions, district authorities have issued a list of dos and don’ts for citizens, appealing to them to take all preventive measures. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid going out during peak heat hours, and wear light clothing.
