Panaji witnessed a vibrant gathering of children, activists, and environmentalists on Saturday. They came together to explore the shrinking safety nets of human lives and discuss practical ways to protect them. This event was the one-day Green Glow Environmental Festival, organized in partnership with the Goa State Biodiversity Board.
Learning Through Environmental Films
Young students sat alongside seasoned environmentalists to watch compelling documentaries. They viewed 'Little Planet: A Tale of Frogs' by filmmaker Suhas Premkumar. Premkumar dedicated nearly seven years to capturing the diverse frog species in the Sahyadri hill range. Another film, 'Turtles with Antenna' by Arti Kulkarni, highlighted the fragile state of olive ridley turtles along the Maharashtra coast.
Creative Competitions for Students
The festival also featured a poster-making and wallpaper-making competition focused on environmental preservation. Students enthusiastically participated, showcasing their artistic talents and commitment to nature.
Insights from Key Figures
Pradeep Sarmokkadam, the member secretary of GSBB, shared his perspective. He emphasized that true environmental learning extends beyond classroom walls. Nature is your best teacher, he stated. Sarmokkadam urged everyone to shift focus from problems to solutions. All efforts should go into protecting nature, he added. If you do that, nature will protect you.
Continuing a Legacy of Awareness
Tomazinho Cardozo, managing trustee of the Green Ray foundation, spoke about the festival's deeper purpose. His primary goal is to continue the legacy envisioned by the late founder, Maria Claudette Pinto. Pinto aimed to create awareness and equip students with preservation values. These students would then guide society forward in similar efforts. Cardozo noted that Pinto ensured the continuity of student-oriented activities by reserving substantial funds, even after her passing.
The Green Glow Environmental Festival successfully blended education, creativity, and community engagement. It inspired participants to take actionable steps toward safeguarding our natural world.
