Odisha Braces for Gradual Temperature Increase as IMD Issues Weather Bulletin

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast on Thursday, indicating a gradual rise in both day and night temperatures across Odisha over the next three days. According to the regional IMD center in Bhubaneswar, temperatures are expected to increase by two to three degrees Celsius, marking a shift from recent cooler conditions.

Current Weather Patterns and Recorded Extremes

This forecast comes amid a slight fall in night temperatures in some isolated pockets of the state. On Thursday, the hill station of G Udayagiri in Kandhamal district recorded the lowest temperature in Odisha at 9.7 degrees Celsius. Following closely, Rourkela on the plains registered 12.2 degrees Celsius. In Bhubaneswar, dense fog reduced visibility to 50 meters, with the minimum temperature touching 21.4 degrees Celsius.

Additionally, there were reports of thunderstorm activities at isolated places in various districts over the past 24 hours. The IMD rainfall report highlighted that Barmul in Nayagarh district received the highest rainfall of 5.4 mm during this period.

Expert Insights and Temperature Trends

Manorama Mohanty, head of the regional IMD centre in Bhubaneswar, explained that the current wind patterns are conducive to a gradual rise in both minimum and maximum temperatures throughout the week. She noted that minimum temperatures at nine locations hovered at or below 15 degrees Celsius during the morning hours.

On the higher end, Parlakhemundi recorded the day's highest maximum temperature at 35 degrees Celsius, with Jharsuguda town following at 34.4 degrees Celsius. Bhubaneswar itself saw a maximum of 33.6 degrees Celsius.

IMD Bulletin Details and Anomalies

An IMD bulletin provided further details, stating that minimum temperatures experienced an appreciable fall of about 2-3°C at isolated places during the day. Conversely, night temperatures rose by approximately 3°C at one or two locations. The bulletin also indicated that minimum temperatures were appreciably above normal by about 5°C at one or two places over interior districts and above normal by about 2°C at several other locations across the state.

This mixed weather scenario underscores the dynamic climatic conditions in Odisha, a region known for its vulnerability to cyclones and floods. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest forecasts as temperatures gradually climb in the coming days.
