A powerful Nor'wester storm system swept through Ganjam district on Sunday afternoon, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, and high-speed winds that resulted in significant disruption and injuries. The severe weather event, which prompted an orange warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), has left local authorities scrambling to restore normalcy.
Injuries and Immediate Impact
At least two individuals sustained injuries during the storm, reportedly after being struck by lightning near the Kodala area. Both victims required immediate medical attention and were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their current condition remains under observation as emergency services respond to the aftermath.
Widespread Tree Uprooting and Road Disruption
The intense winds, reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour, caused extensive damage across multiple locations, including Khallikote, Beguniapada, and Nirmalajhar. Numerous roadside trees were uprooted, leading to a complete disruption of road communication between Aska and Balugaon.
Specific affected stretches include:
- The Khallikote to Nirmaljhar route
- The Beguniapada to Tiridi section
This blockage has severely impacted transportation and local mobility, with debris and logs scattered across key roadways.
