North India Faces Escalating Heatwave as Temperatures Climb Sharply

Heatwave conditions are firmly establishing themselves across North India, with maximum temperatures experiencing a sharp increase and predicted to rise even more in the coming days. Several locations in Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh have already recorded temperatures ranging from 3.1°C to 5°C above the seasonal norm as of Sunday morning.

IMD Issues Forecast for Further Temperature Surge

The India Meteorological Department has issued a warning, forecasting an additional increase of 2–4°C in maximum temperatures over Punjab and Haryana by April 24. Specifically, heat wave conditions are likely to affect isolated pockets of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh between April 21 and 23. During this period, warm night conditions are also anticipated at isolated places in Haryana, adding to the discomfort.

Maximum temperatures have already soared above 40°C at certain places in Punjab and Haryana, while most areas in both states have experienced temperatures between 37°C and 40°C. This rapid warming is raising significant concerns, particularly for the agricultural community.

Farmers Endure Hardship Amid Soaring Mercury

The rising temperatures are emerging as a critical issue for farmers who are arriving at grain markets across Punjab and Haryana to sell their wheat crop. Many are forced to spend multiple days at procurement centers waiting for their produce to be lifted. Despite the intense heat, farmers have raised allegations that several mandis lack adequate arrangements for drinking water, exacerbating their hardship and health risks.

Contrast in Night Temperatures and Wind Patterns

In contrast to the daytime highs, the minimum or night temperatures have so far been reported slightly below or near normal in Punjab and Haryana. For instance, the lowest minimum temperature of 19°C was observed at Ludhiana in Punjab over the plains of India on Saturday night.

Additionally, gusty winds were reported in various districts until the morning of April 18. Faridkot experienced winds of 43 kmph, Pathankot recorded 38 kmph, and Amritsar saw 35 kmph. In Himachal Pradesh, Seobagh reported winds of 33 kmph, indicating varied weather patterns alongside the heatwave.

As the heatwave intensifies, authorities and communities are urged to take necessary precautions to mitigate its impacts, especially for vulnerable groups like farmers and outdoor workers.
