North India Cold Wave: Sonamarg Freezes, Fog Causes Pile-Up

North India Shivers Under Severe Cold Wave Conditions

A harsh cold wave continues to grip northern parts of India, bringing freezing temperatures and hazardous weather conditions. The region is experiencing one of the coldest spells this winter season.

Sonamarg Records Sub-Zero Temperature

In Jammu and Kashmir, the popular tourist destination of Sonamarg recorded a bone-chilling temperature of minus 8.9 degrees Celsius. The mercury plunged well below freezing point, creating icy conditions across the area. Light snowfall was also reported in several parts of Himachal Pradesh, adding to the wintry atmosphere.

Dense Fog Leads to Tragic Highway Accident

The cold wave brought dense fog to Uttar Pradesh, severely reducing visibility on major roads. In Bareilly district, this led to a catastrophic pile-up involving at least 20 vehicles on the Delhi-Lucknow National Highway.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning when thick fog blanketed the area. Police confirmed that one person lost their life in the collision, while at least 24 others sustained injuries. Emergency services rushed to the scene to provide medical assistance and clear the wreckage.

Authorities have issued warnings for travelers, advising extra caution on highways during early morning hours when fog is typically at its thickest. The incident highlights the dangerous combination of winter weather and reduced visibility that plagues northern India during this season.

Meteorological departments continue to monitor the situation closely, with forecasts suggesting the cold wave conditions may persist for several more days. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions against the extreme cold, especially vulnerable populations including the elderly and children.
