NMC Transplants Century-Old Banyan Tree in Nashik

Nashik Municipal Corporation Launches Major Tree Conservation Initiative

The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has undertaken a significant environmental conservation project by successfully transplanting a century-old banyan tree. This historic tree was relocated from its original location to the premises of the residential quarters at the Maharashtra Engineering Research Institute (MERI) along Dindori Road in Nashik.

Conservation Efforts for Hazardous Ficus Species

According to an NMC official speaking to TOI, this transplantation initiative forms part of a broader effort to conserve various Ficus tree species, including banyan and peepal trees. These species have been identified as potentially hazardous at multiple locations throughout the city. The civic body has already begun the process of transplanting additional banyan trees from both Gangapur Road and Dindori Road areas.

"These trees were categorized as dangerous because they were either situated directly in the middle of roads or positioned precariously along road edges," explained the official. "Preparatory work including digging pits has already been completed to facilitate the transplantation of the remaining trees identified for relocation."

Expansion Plans Across Nashik

The municipal corporation has developed comprehensive plans to transplant approximately 30 more Ficus trees across three strategic locations within Nashik city. These designated transplantation sites include:

  • The MERI residential colony where the initial transplantation occurred
  • The Police Training Centre premises
  • The Panzra Pol area on the outskirts of Nashik

Compliance with National Green Tribunal Directives

All transplantation activities are being conducted in strict accordance with directives issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT). The environmental regulatory body imposed an interim stay on both tree cutting and transplantation operations until April 28. This stay was granted during a hearing conducted on April 7, 2026.

The NMC official clarified the timeline: "We will carry out all transplantation work following the NGT's directives. The interim stay was implemented on April 7, while the initial banyan tree transplantation at the MERI residential quarters actually took place on April 6, just before the stay order."

This conservation initiative represents a balanced approach to urban development and environmental preservation, addressing safety concerns while protecting Nashik's valuable tree heritage through scientific transplantation methods rather than removal.
