Nilgai Fatally Trapped in Illegal Net in Bharuch, Two Individuals Arrested
In a distressing wildlife incident, a nilgai, also known as the blue bull, was killed after becoming ensnared in an illegal net in the Dahej area of Vagra taluka, Bharuch district. The large antelope was discovered dead in a trap that had been set up to capture wild boar near the Bhutnath Mahadev Temple.
Forest Department Launches Swift Investigation
Upon receiving information about the incident, Vagra range forest officials promptly arrived at the location to assess the situation. After conducting interviews with the temple priest and local villagers, they gathered crucial intelligence that led to the identification and apprehension of the suspects involved.
Vagra range forest officer (RFO) Vijaydan Charan provided details to the media, stating: "We acted immediately on the tip-off and visited the site. Through discussions with community members, we secured leads about the accused. We subsequently arrested Ajay Talaviya and Rakesh Rathod, who were responsible for laying the trap intended for wild boar."
The officer further explained that the trap had been set on Saturday night, and the nilgai became trapped that same evening. It was found deceased in the net the following day. Since such fatalities are classified as hunting under the law, legal proceedings were initiated without delay.
Legal Action and Fines Imposed
Both accused individuals were formally charged under The Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. As a consequence of their actions, each was fined Rs 1 lakh. The nilgai is listed as a Schedule 3 animal, which mandates its protection under Indian wildlife legislation, making this offense particularly serious.
Investigation into Cause of Death Ongoing
The precise cause of the nilgai's death remains under active investigation by forest authorities. Preliminary assessments indicate that the animal likely succumbed due to a combination of factors, including prolonged struggle in the trap, exhaustion, and deprivation of food and water.
Authorities are also examining whether any toxic substances or poisons were involved in the incident. A definitive scientific determination regarding the cause of death is anticipated following the completion of a postmortem examination, the results of which are awaited.
