Nainital and Bhimtal Ravaged by Devastating Forest Fires
On Sunday, massive forest fires broke out in the scenic regions of Nainital and Bhimtal, triggering widespread panic among local residents. The blazes, which ignited in the morning near Pilot Baba Ashram in the Gethia area, rapidly spread due to strong winds, encroaching on forest land and threatening nearby residential zones.
Emergency Efforts to Contain the Flames
Forest department teams, with crucial assistance from locals, managed to contain the flames in populated areas. However, the fire persisted in the steep, hilly terrain of the Aaloo Khet area, burning through the evening. Divisional Forest Officer Aakash Gangwar reported that while the blaze was initially brought under control by evening, strong winds reignited it overnight.
"Two sides of the fire were contained during the night, but one section, located on steep terrain, was difficult to access and could only be tackled today around 1 pm. The fire is now fully under control," Gangwar stated. He added that forest teams remain deployed at the site, monitoring the situation to prevent any flare-ups.
Bhimtal Fire Causes Significant Damage
In Bhimtal, a sudden fire caused substantial damage to forest cover and advanced dangerously close to residential areas, prompting locals to alert authorities. Residents have alleged that miscreants may have deliberately started the fires, demanding strict action against such acts.
Officials worked late into the night to create fire lines, preventing further spread before the blaze was brought under control. More than 30 fire watchers have been stationed at the site, with patrolling intensified across the Nainital forest range following a recent heatwave. Quick Response Teams (QRTs) are on high alert, and the fire brigade has been kept on standby.
Officials Issue Urgent Warnings
Sub-divisional Officer Mamta Chand highlighted the role of dry grass in fueling the fire's rapid spread. "Dry grass acted as fuel, causing the fire to spread at an alarming rate. We urge the public to report any sightings of smoke or fire immediately via the forest department's mobile app," she emphasized.
The Divisional Forest Officer has urged residents to remain vigilant and immediately inform police or forest officials about any suspicious activity or individuals attempting to start forest fires. This call to action aims to enhance community involvement in preventing future incidents.
