Mumbai is set to host the second edition of Mumbai Climate Week (MCW) from February 22 to 26, 2027. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday, who also released the outcome and impact report of the inaugural edition held earlier this year from February 17 to 19.
Inaugural Edition Report Highlights
The report detailed the various Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed during the first edition. Conversations during the week focused on food systems, urban resilience, and energy transition efforts, coordinated through cross-cutting sessions on governance, finance, innovation, and data. This framework ensured that ideas were discussed within the context of policies, markets, and institutions required to scale them effectively.
Government Support and Vision
Releasing the report and announcing the dates for the second edition, Chief Minister Fadnavis extended the government's support along with the Department of Environment and Climate Change. He stated, “We look forward to creating high impact solutions which are citizen friendly and at the same time progressive.”
Focus on Citizen Participation and Action
The second edition of MCW will emphasize creating climate solution opportunities. Shishir Joshi, founder and chief executive of NGO Project Mumbai, which organizes MCW, said, “MCW 2027 will be about citizen participation, widespread awareness, action and implementation. We are hoping to bring stakeholders across age groups to participate in local action and climate diplomacy.” The initiative is supported by the Government of Maharashtra, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA), and Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Diverse Stakeholder Engagement
The first edition successfully brought together policymakers, corporates, civil society organizations, international governments, and citizens from diverse age groups and backgrounds. Attendees included sustainability leaders from over 30 countries, including the Niti Aayog chairperson, statesmen such as Hillary Clinton, cosmonauts Rakesh Sharma and Shubhanshu Shukla, sports figures Sachin Tendulkar and Ajinkya Rane, as well as Indian industry leaders like Noel Tata and Nadir Godrej.
Mumbai Climate Week aims to foster collaborative efforts in addressing climate challenges and scaling impactful solutions through inclusive participation and cross-sector dialogue.
