Maharashtra Coastal Authority Takes Action Against Land Encroachment Threat in Mumbai
The Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) has officially stepped in to address a critical environmental and administrative concern in Mumbai. This follows a formal complaint highlighting the severe risk of encroachment on over 116 acres of embargoed government industrial land located in the Charkop area of Kandivli West.
Formal Complaint Triggers Official Intervention
The issue was brought to light by Reji Abraham, representing the United Association for Social, Educational and Public Welfare Trust. Abraham filed a detailed complaint alleging that the significant parcel of government land is in grave and imminent danger of being completely encroached upon. The complaint specifically noted that a prominent private contractor has already erected its banner on the site, a clear indicator of unauthorized activity.
"We are relieved that the MCZMA has recently supported our complaint regarding the encroachments happening on this government industrial land," stated Abraham. He emphasized that no formal sale or land lease can legally occur on this property without explicit permission from the suburban district collector.
MCZMA's Proactive Communications and Demands
In response to the allegations, the MCZMA has taken decisive administrative action. The authority has dispatched official communiques to two key bodies:
- The State Revenue Department
- The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)
The core directive in these communications is clear: ensure that no encroachment whatsoever takes place on the designated 116-acre plot. The MCZMA's letter to the BMC goes a step further, explicitly mentioning that the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) is a viable and recommended course of action in this matter.
"Based on the facts we have placed before the government authorities, we are now demanding that an FIR be filed," Abraham added, underscoring the seriousness with which the trust views the potential illegal occupation of the land.
Legal and Environmental Stakes of the Land
The land in question is not just any plot; it is embargoed government industrial land, meaning its use is restricted and controlled by state authorities. Unauthorized encroachment poses a dual threat:
- Legal and Administrative Breach: It violates the embargo and bypasses the mandatory approval process from the district collector.
- Environmental Risk: Given the MCZMA's involvement, the land likely falls within or near coastal regulation zones, making its protection crucial for environmental conservation.
The MCZMA's intervention highlights a proactive approach to safeguarding public assets and enforcing coastal zone regulations in Mumbai's rapidly developing western suburbs.
