Unseasonal Hailstorms Wreak Havoc Across Marathwada Region in Maharashtra
In a severe weather event, unseasonal rainfall accompanied by intense hailstorms battered several districts in Maharashtra's Marathwada region on Wednesday night. The affected areas include Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Dharashiv, Latur, Hingoli, and Beed, with widespread reports of agricultural devastation and infrastructure disruptions.
Agricultural Damage Feared in Key Cropping Zones
The untimely weather phenomena are feared to have inflicted substantial damage to kesar and other varieties of mangoes, turmeric cultivation, and rabi crops that were near harvesting. Farmers and officials express deep concern over the potential economic impact on the agrarian community.
Parts of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city experienced hailstorm along with light to moderate showers, lightning, and thunder around 10:30 PM on Wednesday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded approximately 8mm of rainfall by Thursday morning. While no fresh showers were reported in the region till Thursday evening, several areas continued to witness partly cloudy skies. Day temperatures remained slightly below normal, offering a brief respite from the prevailing heat.
Traffic Disruptions and Official Assessments
One of the major weather-related disruptions occurred on the Solapur-Dhule highway, where traffic halted briefly around midnight due to heavy hailstorm and waterlogging on service roads. This incident highlighted the immediate infrastructural challenges posed by the extreme weather.
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district disaster management officer Maroti Mhaske stated that Kannad was among the worst-hit talukas, receiving intense hailstorm on Wednesday night. "There has been no loss of life or property so far due to the unseasonal rain and adverse weather. Local authorities are expected to assess any potential agricultural damage," he said, emphasizing the ongoing evaluation process.
Widespread Crop Impact Across Multiple Districts
Dharashiv resident deputy collector Vidyacharna Kadavkar reported that grape and watermelon plantations, along with other crops, were also affected in the region. "Parts of Dharashiv, Lohara, and Tuljapur talukas received severe hailstorms. Instructions have been given to conduct panchanamas to assess crop losses," he explained, outlining the administrative response to the crisis.
Farmers' leader Jayaji Suryawanshi highlighted that parts of Marathwada have reported major unseasonal rainfall multiple times in March so far. "Hailstorms cause irrevocable damage to different aspects of agriculture and horticulture. The repeated extreme weather events have broken the back of farmers," he lamented, pointing to the cumulative stress on the farming community.
Consolidated Data Pending as Weather Alert Continues
Divisional authorities from the revenue department indicated that no consolidated data for crop losses and other damage in Marathwada due to unseasonal rain in March was available immediately. This lack of comprehensive figures underscores the scale and complexity of the assessment required.
As per IMD forecasts, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and other parts of Marathwada are likely to witness partly cloudy skies with the possibility of thunder and lightning development for the next 48 hours. This ongoing weather alert suggests that farmers and residents must remain vigilant against further adverse conditions.
