Major Fire Erupts Again at Bhopal's Adampur Landfill Site, Sparking Panic and Health Concerns
A significant fire erupted once more on Monday afternoon at the contentious Adampur solid waste management landfill site located on the outskirts of Bhopal. The blaze ignited around 3 PM within a massive heap of accumulated waste, with flames rapidly shooting nearly 20 feet into the air, creating a dramatic and hazardous spectacle.
Immediate Response and Firefighting Efforts
Workers at the landfill site promptly alerted fire personnel who were already stationed there following the outbreak. Four fire tenders present on-site immediately began tackling the intense flames, and they were later reinforced by an additional unit dispatched from the city to assist in the emergency operation. Strong winds fueled the fire's rapid spread across the waste mounds, compelling firefighters to engage in a strenuous battle for nearly three hours before they could bring the situation under control.
Continuous water spraying from multiple strategic directions was employed to subdue the blaze effectively. Commuters traveling along Raisen Road and residents of nearby villages reported significant alarm as a dense cloud of black smoke lingered in the sky, visible from as far as 10 kilometers away. Landfill staff also worked diligently to clear waste around the fire zone to prevent any further spread of the flames.

The landfill currently holds an estimated thousands of tons of waste, with mounds rising to heights of 20–25 feet. Fires at this site are a frequent occurrence, often triggered by the intense summer heat and the combustible gases generated within the decomposing waste materials.

Nearby rural settlements frequently bear the brunt of these landfill fires. Residents have reported experiencing eye irritation and breathing difficulties due to the thick smoke, which can linger for hours, raising serious public health concerns. The area, including Adampur Khanti, has been marked by multiple fires, court cases, and the burden of hosting the city's landfill site in its vicinity.
In a related development, the Supreme Court, while hearing BMC's plea against a Rs 1.80 crore fine imposed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) three years ago for environmental violations, had last month added teeth to the new Solid Waste Management Rules 2026. These rules, set to come into force from April 1, include provisions for prosecuting every person, official, and authority found contributing to, abetting, or neglecting their statutory duties, making them liable to fines.
The central bench of the NGT had slapped a hefty penalty of Rs 1.80 crore on the BMC in 2023 for environmental damage to Bhopal due to non-adherence to solid waste disposal rules, with the BMC subsequently appealing this order in the Supreme Court.
