Maharashtra's Mild Winter to Continue for Another Week
Residents across Maharashtra can expect the current mild winter conditions to persist for at least another week. The India Meteorological Department confirms that easterly winds are influencing the weather pattern, delaying the arrival of sharper cold spells.
Easterly Winds Delay Winter Chill
IMD officials explain that minimum temperatures across the state will not drop significantly over the next seven days. Easterly winds and residual moisture in the atmosphere are limiting night-time cooling. Scientist S D Sanap from the IMD provides clear insights into this weather phenomenon.
"The dry and cold northwesterly winds that typically bring winter chill have weakened," Sanap states. "Easterly winds currently dominate, increasing cloudiness over parts of Maharashtra."
He elaborates that cloudy nights trap heat absorbed by the earth during daytime. This trapped heat releases back toward the surface, preventing sharp temperature drops and resulting in relatively warmer nights.
Extended Forecast Shows Temperature Patterns
The IMD's extended range forecast signals above-normal minimum temperatures during January 16-22. The following week from January 23-29 shows mixed tendencies. Parts of Maharashtra could experience lower minimum temperatures during this second week, indicating a return to near-normal winter night conditions.
"For the next six to seven days, minimum temperatures should remain at current levels due to easterly influence," Sanap adds.
Pune's Friday Temperatures Reflect Trend
Weather observations from Friday clearly demonstrate this warming trend. Minimum temperatures in Pune stayed above normal at most monitoring locations.
- Shivajinagar recorded 13.2°C
- Pashan measured 12.8°C
- Lohegaon and Chinchwad reported warmer nights at 17.3°C
- Magarpatta reached 18.2°C
- NDA remained cooler at 11.4°C
National Weather Outlook
An IMD national bulletin on Friday indicated no significant change in minimum temperatures over Maharashtra until Saturday. A gradual rise of 2–3°C is expected over the subsequent three days, followed by stable conditions.
The current weather pattern offers temporary relief from harsh winter conditions. However, residents should prepare for colder nights as January progresses toward its final week.
