Madurai NGO Plants Trees for 250th Week, Engages Youth in Conservation
Madurai NGO's 250th Week of Tree Planting Boosts Green Drive

The Yanaimalai Green Foundation in Madurai achieved a significant milestone this week. The group celebrated its 250th consecutive week of tree planting with a special ceremony. The event took place near the Naga Kali Amman Temple on the Othakadai–Melur Main Road. It coincided with the occasion of Thai Amavasai.

A Weekly Commitment to Greenery

As part of its ongoing weekly initiative, the foundation planted Vanni saplings at the site. This activity forms a core part of the organization's regular efforts. Every Sunday, members gather for tree plantation and maintenance work. Their tasks include pruning existing trees, providing support to leaning saplings, and watering plants to ensure their survival.

Focus on Education and Environment

Thennavan, a government school headmaster and an active member of the foundation, explained the group's mission. He said the foundation focuses on three key areas: the environment, tree conservation, and education. "We involve schoolchildren in these activities to create awareness about environmental protection," Thennavan stated. "Our goal is to instil a sense of responsibility towards nature in the younger generation."

Why Choose Vanni Trees?

Highlighting the choice of saplings, Thennavan pointed out the strong indigenous significance of Vanni trees. These trees are well-suited to the local climate and can survive for many years with minimal maintenance. Their resilience makes them an ideal choice for long-term environmental projects.

Ensuring Long-Term Success

The foundation has plans to revisit the planting site periodically. They will monitor the growth of the saplings and provide necessary support as they mature. To combat water scarcity, especially during peak summer months like June and July, the foundation deploys water tankers. This ensures adequate watering for the plants, even in challenging conditions.

Advisors and members of the Yanaimalai Green Foundation actively participated in the event. Their dedication highlights a community-driven approach to environmental conservation in Madurai.
