Lucknow's Temperature Takes a Surprising Turn
Residents of Lucknow experienced a dramatic weather reversal this week. Just two days after enduring the coldest winter night in two years, the city basked in unusually warm conditions on Monday. Both maximum and minimum temperatures climbed significantly above normal levels.
Sudden Warmth Defies Winter Expectations
The mercury rose unexpectedly despite light morning drizzle. Maximum temperatures reached 26.4 degrees Celsius, marking a substantial 5.4-degree increase above normal. Minimum temperatures followed suit, settling at 11.6 degrees Celsius, which was 3.8 degrees higher than usual.
This represented a sharp contrast from Sunday's readings. On that day, maximum temperatures had only reached 23.4 degrees Celsius while minimum temperatures dropped to 6.4 degrees Celsius. The night temperature essentially doubled within a single day.
Adding to the unusual conditions, familiar winter elements disappeared completely. Wind chill effects vanished and fog failed to materialize across the city.
Meteorological Explanation Behind the Shift
Senior scientist Mohammad Danish from the Met department explained the sudden change. A western disturbance developing over the Himalayas disrupted normal weather patterns. This system effectively blocked the flow of northwesterly cold winds that typically descend from the hills.
The same weather phenomenon affected broader regions beyond Lucknow. It triggered scattered rainfall in various parts of Uttar Pradesh while reducing fog density at most locations.
Weather Patterns Continue to Evolve
The western disturbance weakened toward Monday evening, setting the stage for further changes. Meteorological forecasts indicate temperatures will gradually decrease by several degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Tuesday's weather outlook suggests mainly clear skies with shallow morning fog. Maximum temperatures should hover around 25 degrees Celsius while minimum temperatures might drop to approximately 10 degrees Celsius.
More Changes on the Horizon
Don't store those winter clothes away just yet. Two fresh western disturbances are approaching the country and will impact hill regions successively.
These systems are expected to bring light rainfall and thunderstorms across Uttar Pradesh between Thursday and Saturday. Lucknow specifically might experience thundershowers on Saturday.
Once these disturbances dissipate, cold mountain winds should regain strength. This revival will likely cause another temperature drop, bringing back colder conditions to the region.
Winter Rainfall Deficit Concerns
This winter season has remained predominantly dry so far. Weather office data reveals concerning rainfall shortages across Uttar Pradesh.
The state's average per district rainfall for January typically measures 7.4mm. Current actual rainfall stands at 99% below normal levels. Eastern Uttar Pradesh shows a complete 100% deficit while western regions experience 99% below normal rainfall.
Lucknow itself mirrors this pattern with rainfall measurements 99% below normal expectations for this period.
