In a significant move towards ecological restoration, the Shri Jyotirlinga Kshetra Bahuayami Utkarsh Pradhikaran in Kolhapur has initiated a major green campaign named 'Dakkhan Kedaranya'. The ambitious project aims to replant 2,000 large trees that were affected by the ongoing work of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The physical work for this initiative commenced on Thursday, marking a concrete step towards environmental conservation.
Launching a Green Revival
The campaign was officially launched by MLA Dr. Vinay Kore in a ceremony attended by key district officials. The event saw the presence of District Collector Amol Yedge, NHAI Project Director Sanjay Kadam, and Kolhapur Sub-Conservator of Forests Dhairyasheel Patil, among others. The development authority itself was formed with the specific mandate to rejuvenate the ancient spiritual and natural heritage of the revered Jyotiba Hill area.
Dr. Kore outlined the vision behind the drive, stating that the goal is to recreate the natural sacred groves that existed in the past. He emphasized that the replanting effort is not just about numbers but about biodiversity and cultural heritage. "All the indigenous species of trees described in the religious book 'Kedar Vijay' pertaining to the hill are being planted here," he explained, connecting the ecological effort directly to the region's spiritual texts and history.
Phased Implementation and Immediate Action
District Collector Amol Yedge provided specific details about the project's rollout. He confirmed that the action began symbolically and practically on Thursday with the replanting of 10 trees that had been removed due to the Kagal-Satara and Nagpur-Ratnagiri National Highway projects. This initial step is set to be rapidly scaled up.
"In the coming days, 200 trees will be replanted immediately in a similar manner," Yedge stated. He further announced the long-term target, confirming that this number will eventually be increased to 2,000 trees. This phased approach ensures systematic execution and care for the transplanted trees.
Balancing Development and Ecology
The 'Dakkhan Kedaranya' initiative represents a critical model for balancing infrastructure development with environmental responsibility. While national highway projects are essential for connectivity and economic growth, they often disrupt local ecosystems. This proactive replanting drive by the Shri Jyotirlinga Kshetra Authority, in coordination with the NHAI and forest department, sets a precedent for compensatory afforestation that is both large-scale and species-specific.
The focus on indigenous species mentioned in ancient texts adds a layer of cultural and botanical authenticity to the project. It ensures that the restored green cover will be in harmony with the local environment and hold significance for the community's faith and traditions. The collaborative effort between a spiritual development authority, elected representatives, and government agencies highlights a holistic approach to preserving Kolhapur's natural and sacred landscape for future generations.
