Kolhapur's Waterhole Census 'Nisarganubhav' Scheduled for Buddha Purnima 2026

The forest department in Kolhapur has announced that the traditional waterhole census, known as 'Nisarganubhav', will be conducted on the night of Buddha Purnima, which falls on May 1, 2026. This annual event provides a unique opportunity for nature enthusiasts to immerse themselves in the wilderness and observe wildlife up close.

Scaffold Construction Underway in Key Wildlife Areas

Preparations are in full swing, with the construction of scaffolds currently underway in the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, the Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Sagareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. These structures will serve as observation points for participants during the census.

While the forest department employs modern scientific methods such as camera traps and the transit line technique for official animal counts, the waterhole census is maintained as a heritage activity. It allows the public to engage directly with forest ecosystems in a fun and educational manner.

A Night of Forest Thrills and Wildlife Insights

Tushar Chavan, the field director at Sahyadri Tiger Reserve, elaborated on the programme's significance. "The forest department conducts this waterhole animal census annually in May on Buddha Purnima night across several protected areas, including Chandoli National Park, Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary, Radhanagari Wildlife Sanctuary in Kolhapur district, and Sagareshwar Sanctuary in Sangli district," he stated.

Chavan further explained, "Participants get to spend a full day and night in the forest, experiencing its sights, sounds, and rich biodiversity. This initiative bridges the gap between the public and wild animals, offering firsthand knowledge of forest resources and the conservation efforts undertaken by our department."

Registration Details and Participant Guidelines

The forest department has opened invitations for wildlife enthusiasts to join this exclusive event. Online registration will be available via a Google Form from April 17 to April 21, 2026, until 12 PM. The nature experience programme is scheduled to run from 12 PM on May 1, 2026, to 10 AM on May 2, 2026.

Each scaffold has a limited capacity, accommodating only 2-3 participants along with at least one government officer or employee. Due to the restricted space, the management of the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve retains the sole authority to select participants and allocate scaffolding positions among applicants.

Eligibility criteria require participants to be between 18 and 70 years old. Individuals under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian to ensure safety and supervision during the overnight stay.

Promoting Public Engagement in Wildlife Conservation

This waterhole census not only serves as an adventurous activity but also plays a crucial role in fostering public awareness and support for wildlife conservation. By involving citizens in such initiatives, the forest department aims to cultivate a deeper appreciation for India's natural heritage and the ongoing efforts to protect it.

The 'Nisarganubhav' event stands as a testament to the blend of traditional practices with community involvement, ensuring that the thrill of the forest continues to inspire future generations of nature lovers in Kolhapur and beyond.
