Environmentalists Stage Protest Against Proposed Villa Project in Kodagu
In Madikeri, environmental activists have organized a significant protest against a proposed villa development project situated on the Bittangala–Balugodu road. The demonstration highlights growing concerns over environmental degradation and the unchecked expansion of large-scale constructions in the ecologically sensitive region of Kodagu.
Voices of Concern: Activists Decry Environmental Destruction
Addressing the gathered protesters, environmentalist Col CP Muthanna (retd) issued a stern warning against the villa construction, which is being promoted under the guise of development. He emphasized that such projects are leading to severe environmental destruction across Kodagu, where numerous villas and extensive developments are being undertaken without adequate oversight or hindrance.
Col Muthanna called for immediate legal action against departmental officials who have granted permissions for these projects, accusing them of negligence in safeguarding the region's natural heritage.
Climate Change and Accountability: Activists Demand Investigations
Activist Rajiv Bopaiah linked the ongoing environmental destruction directly to climate change, urging a thorough investigation into the roles of gram panchayat and other departmental officials who approved the construction works. He stressed that unchecked development is exacerbating ecological imbalances, with far-reaching consequences for the local climate and biodiversity.
Tourism at Risk: Economic Implications of Environmental Degradation
Padmini, a member of the 'Save Kodagu' group, voiced concerns over the potential decline in tourist arrivals if environmental destruction continues unabated. She warned that transforming the region into a concrete jungle would deter tourists, thereby severely impacting livelihoods that depend heavily on tourism. The preservation of Kodagu's natural beauty is crucial for sustaining its economic vitality.
Ecological Sensitivity: Proximity to Protected Forest Areas
Maletira Srinivas, representing the Appiko movement, highlighted the critical location of the construction site, which is near the Brahmagiri Reserve Forest and the Makutta forest area. This proximity raises alarms about potential encroachments and disturbances to these protected zones, threatening wildlife habitats and forest ecosystems.
The protest underscores a broader call for sustainable development practices in Kodagu, balancing growth with environmental conservation to protect the region's unique ecological and cultural identity.
