Kerala Braces for Intense Heat as IMD Sounds Yellow Alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a hot and humid warning for Kerala on Saturday, following a scorching day where Palakkad crossed the critical 40-degree Celsius mark. This alert comes as maximum temperatures are predicted to remain alarmingly high across the state, prompting concerns for public health and safety.

Temperature Surge and District-Specific Forecasts

On Friday, Palakkad sizzled at a blistering 40.1°C, which is 3.4 degrees above its normal seasonal average. Not far behind, Punalur recorded 39.8°C, a steep 4.5 degrees above normal, with humidity levels reaching 78% and a heat index estimated between 45-48 degrees, making conditions feel even more oppressive.

For Saturday, the IMD has sounded a yellow alert, indicating that maximum temperatures are very likely to hover around 39°C at isolated places in Palakkad and 38°C in Kollam. Other districts are expected to experience a 2-3 degree rise in maximum temperatures:

  • 37°C: Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thrissur.
  • 36°C: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

Additional temperature readings from Friday highlight the widespread heat, with Kannur airport at 38.1°C, Kottayam at 37.6°C, Cial Kochi at 37.5°C, and Vellanikkara at 37.1°C.

Thunderstorm Activity and Weather Patterns

Despite the intense heat, the IMD forecasts that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are very likely to occur at one or two places over Kerala on Saturday. This mixed weather pattern underscores the volatile climatic conditions currently affecting the region.

The combination of high temperatures and humidity poses significant risks, including heat-related illnesses and discomfort for residents. Authorities are urging the public to take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and seeking shade whenever possible.

This heatwave event aligns with broader trends of rising temperatures in India, emphasizing the need for adaptive measures and increased awareness about climate impacts on local weather systems.
