Kaziranga Forest Officials Thwart Rhino Poaching Bid in Nighttime Operation
In a significant victory for wildlife protection, forest officials in the Biswanath wildlife division of Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve successfully foiled a rhino poaching attempt late Saturday night. Acting on specific intelligence, authorities intensified patrolling in the eastern range's Gamari area, leading to the interception of a suspect near the Gonati forest camp around 10:30 PM.
Swift Response and Pursuit
According to KNPTR director Sonali Ghosh, patrolling staff spotted an individual carrying what appeared to be a packed firearm. A joint team, comprising personnel from the Eastern and Crime Investigation Range, along with assistant conservator of forests Gautam Timung and Utpal Borah, range officer Debashis Dutta, and the divisional forest officer, launched an immediate pursuit. Despite their efforts, the suspect managed to escape under the cover of darkness, taking advantage of the challenging terrain and poor visibility.
Recovery of Critical Evidence
Although the suspect fled, a thorough search of the area yielded crucial evidence. Officials recovered parts of a .315 rifle and a pair of shoes believed to belong to the individual. Further combing operations led to the discovery of a black bag containing additional rifle components, 13 rounds of live ammunition, a mobile phone, and other items. Authorities have stated that these materials were intended for poaching, indicating a planned and premeditated attempt.
Ongoing Investigation and Conservation Commitment
Forest officials emphasized that the recovered items have provided vital leads in the investigation. Efforts are currently underway to identify and apprehend the suspect, with search operations continuing in the region.
