Unseasonal Hailstorms Sweep Across Karnataka, Disrupting Daily Life

Unseasonal rain accompanied by intense hailstorms swept across several parts of Karnataka, including north Bengaluru, on Tuesday, bringing much-needed relief from scorching heat but also significantly disrupting daily life and activities.

IMD Forecast and Scientific Explanation

Scientists from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast predicting thundershowers at isolated places in various districts, along with strong, gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph, expected to persist until the weekend. CS Patil, a scientist at IMD Bengaluru, attributed the hailstorm phenomenon to multiple atmospheric factors.

"There is a north-south trough extending over the interiors of Karnataka, combined with a discontinuity of winds. Additionally, all districts have reported scorching heat over the past few days, which has contributed to the development of intense hailstorms at isolated locations in both north and south-interior Karnataka districts," explained Patil.

Impact on Bengaluru and Surrounding Areas

In Bengaluru, specific neighborhoods such as Sanjaynagar and Hebbal experienced hailstorms during the evening hours. Sanjaynagar resident Madukar Raj shared his observations with local media, stating, "I have witnessed hailstorms in the city before, but these were particularly large ice cubes. The hailstorm lasted for approximately 10 minutes, followed by substantial rainfall. I ventured outside just to observe the hailstones; it was a fascinating sight, though travelers should exercise caution."

Light-to-moderate showers also lashed parts of RT Nagar, Hebbal, Nagawara, and Kammanahalli during the night. IMD officials have indicated a possibility of intense thunderstorms developing between the Doddaballapur and Chikkaballapur areas, which includes the vicinity of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). Despite the thundershowers, IMD officials anticipate that maximum and minimum temperatures in Bengaluru will likely hover around 33°C and 21°C, respectively.

Disaster Management and Safety Advisories

The Greater Bengaluru Authority issued a comprehensive rain advisory following forecasts of light-to-moderate showers across the city. The disaster management team urgently advised residents to:

  • Avoid traveling during heavy spells of rain.
  • Stay away from electric poles and trees due to significant safety risks.
  • Avoid waterlogged underpasses to prevent accidents and vehicle damage.

Regional Impacts and Tragic Incident

In Dharwad and Raichur, parts of the regions were literally transformed into an all-white landscape after an accumulation of 4-5 inches of hail covered roads and agricultural fields. Youngsters in Kalaghatagi, Dharwad, were seen rejoicing on the streets, but traffic conditions deteriorated significantly, with several buses and two-wheelers forced to stop midway due to extremely slippery surfaces.

Hassan city reported heavy hailstorms leading to subsequent waterlogging and flooding of drains. Tragedy struck in Koppal district when a 15-year-old boy named Manjunath lost his life after being struck by lightning while working in a field located in Yelburga taluk.

Continued Vigilance Required

IMD authorities have directed all districts to remain on high alert as hailstorms, lightning, and strong winds could pose ongoing risks to public safety and infrastructure. The unseasonal weather pattern serves as a reminder of the importance of heeding meteorological warnings and adhering to safety protocols during such extreme weather events.
