Kanpur: In response to the ongoing extreme heat conditions, the district administration has formulated a comprehensive heatwave action plan to ensure preparedness and protection against its adverse effects.
Key Directives Issued by District Magistrate
District Magistrate Jitendra Pratap Singh has instructed all departments to work in close coordination to provide relief during the heatwave and ensure that essential arrangements are made well in advance.
Healthcare Measures
The DM directed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to establish a ‘cool ward’ at the district hospital. Additionally, he ordered the setup of ‘cool rooms’ with a capacity of at least five beds at all community health centres and primary health centres to provide immediate relief to patients suffering from heat-related illnesses.
Water Management and Infrastructure
The revenue department has been tasked with submitting a list of ponds and other water sources in the district. Based on this list, the irrigation department will arrange to fill them during the summer months to ensure water availability.
The District Magistrate also directed the police to provide details of personnel on traffic duty, enabling the municipal corporation to set up shelters for their relief from the scorching heat.
Public Amenities and Livestock Protection
The municipal corporation was instructed to provide shade, drinking water, and other relief facilities at key locations across the city. Meanwhile, the veterinary department was directed to ensure adequate measures to protect livestock in gaushalas from heatstroke.
The transport department was instructed to ensure drinking water and seating arrangements for passengers at bus stands. The jal nigam was directed to maintain an uninterrupted supply of potable water during the heatwave and deploy tankers wherever required.
Emergency Preparedness
The fire department has been directed to remain on 24/7 alert at all centres and to keep an inventory of resources ready to ensure a swift response in the event of any emergency. Instructions have also been issued to conduct awareness campaigns in rural areas in view of the potential risk of fire incidents.
Senior district officials and disaster management experts attended the meeting where these directives were issued.
