In a significant step towards enhancing public health and environmental safety, Jharkhand State Development Commissioner Ajoy Kumar Singh has issued directives to ensure that all upcoming waste processing plants are established at a safe distance from residential areas, hospitals, and water supply sources. This measure aims to prevent any adverse effects on citizens.
First Meeting of State-Level Core Committee
Chairing the inaugural meeting of the newly constituted state-level core committee for implementation and monitoring of the Solid Waste Management Rules 2026 late on Thursday, Singh called upon all stakeholder departments to prepare a detailed action plan for the effective and systematic enforcement of the new regulations across both urban and rural areas of the state.
Strengthening Rural Waste Management
To bolster waste management in rural regions, Singh directed deputy commissioners in all districts to identify suitable sites at the panchayat level for waste segregation and to formulate plans for establishing processing plants. He stated, “Two to three clusters should be developed in each district where waste can be collected and processed using scientific methods.”
Engagement of Third-Party Agencies
The meeting also involved detailed discussions on engaging third-party agencies for door-to-door waste collection. Singh emphasized, “These external agencies should be tasked with collecting waste directly from households and transporting it efficiently to the designated processing plants.” He further stressed the need to clearly define the accountability of panchayats and called for a robust mechanism to collect waste at the grassroots level and transport it to segregation units.
Decentralised Strategy
As part of the decentralised approach, directives were issued to create a comprehensive waste processing system by identifying central points within a radius of 50 to 60 kilometers. This strategy aims to ensure efficient waste management across the state, minimizing environmental impact and safeguarding public health.
