Jeypore Forest Division Battles Rising Fire Incidents with Proactive Measures
The Jeypore forest division in Koraput district has reported a significant number of forest fire incidents during the first four months of this year. Official records reveal that between January 1 and April 21, the division documented 231 forest fire incidents across various locations.
Breakdown of Fire Incidents
According to detailed statistics, 183 of these incidents occurred within designated forest areas, while the remaining 48 fires were reported outside forest boundaries. Despite this concerning spike in fire occurrences, forest officials have confirmed that all reported fires were successfully brought under control through coordinated efforts.
Enhanced Firefighting Preparedness Through Mock Drills
In response to the increasing number of incidents, the forest department has initiated a comprehensive campaign to strengthen its firefighting capabilities. A significant component of this initiative involved conducting mock drills across all six ranges under the Jeypore division.
Divisional Forest Officer Pratap Behera explained that these exercises are specifically designed to equip field staff with proper protocols for swift response to fire alerts. "Forest fires occur due to various reasons," Behera stated. "While our teams remain alert, fires in deep forest areas sometimes take time to reach and control."
Training Components and Community Involvement
The mock drills provide hands-on training that helps officials understand several critical aspects of fire response:

- Effective communication with the control room
- Proper deployment of firefighting personnel and resources
To enhance community participation in fire prevention efforts, the department is actively involving members of the Vana Surakhya Samiti in these training exercises. Forest Range Officer Debendra Majhi noted that incidents typically rise during Chaita Parab in April, when traditional hunting practices often involve setting parts of forests on fire to flush out animals. These practices lead to significant ecological damage and pose serious fire risks.
"As part of our outreach efforts, we are organizing meetings with villagers, street plays, and awareness drives in local tribal dialects," Majhi explained. "These initiatives aim to discourage such harmful practices and promote forest conservation among local communities."

The Jeypore forest division covers an extensive area of 2,498 square kilometers and comprises six distinct ranges: Jeypore, Boipariguda, Kotpad, Gupteswar, Kundura, and Borigumma. Within this territory, the forest cover spans approximately 1,104 square kilometers.
This year's fire incidents represent a notable development when compared to previous seasons. During the previous summer season, the division reported around 500 forest fire incidents, indicating that while current numbers remain concerning, they represent a potential improvement from previous years.

Despite the challenges presented by the current fire season, forest officials remain optimistic about future prospects. "We are hopeful that sustained awareness efforts and preparedness measures will help bring down the number of such incidents in the coming months," Behera concluded, emphasizing the department's commitment to continuous improvement in fire prevention and response capabilities.
