The city of Indore witnessed its warmest night of the current season on Monday, with the minimum temperature soaring to 25.1 degrees Celsius. This reading was a significant four degrees above the normal range for this time of year, marking a notable shift in local weather patterns.
Sudden Weather Shift with Thunder and Light Rain
The unusual warmth was accompanied by dramatic atmospheric changes, including thunder, lightning, and light rainfall across various parts of the city. This weather activity provided brief but uneven relief from the persistent heat that has characterized recent days. Cloud activity that began late Sunday night resulted in 0.2 mm of rainfall in several areas, representing the first recorded precipitation of the month.
The overnight temperature remained unusually elevated, crossing the 25-degree Celsius threshold for the first time this year. This phenomenon created conditions where residents experienced minimal relief from daytime heat during what would typically be cooler nighttime hours.
Daytime Temperatures Show Marginal Improvement
On Monday, the maximum temperature registered at 39.5 degrees Celsius, showing a slight decrease from Sunday's peak of 40.6 degrees Celsius. Despite this marginal dip, temperatures remained above seasonal norms, continuing the trend of elevated heat. At 8:30 am, the mercury stood at 28.8 degrees Celsius, indicating warm conditions from the early morning hours.
Heat conditions have persisted remarkably, with temperatures staying above 40 degrees Celsius for five consecutive days prior to Monday's reading. The city experienced further thunderstorm activity and isolated light rain on Monday, though this provided only temporary respite from the prevailing warmth.

Weather experts explained the contrasting role that cloud cover plays in influencing temperature variations. During daylight hours, clouds reduce direct solar radiation reaching the ground, which typically leads to a slight decrease in maximum temperatures. However, during nighttime, the same cloud cover acts as an insulating blanket, trapping heat near the surface and preventing its escape into the atmosphere. This dual effect results in warmer nights even when daytime temperatures show some moderation.
Wind patterns during this period remained predominantly west and north-westerly, with speeds reaching up to 45 kilometers per hour during the most intense thunderstorm activity. These winds contributed to the movement of weather systems across the region.

The Meteorological Department has indicated that no significant change in maximum temperature is expected over the next two days. Following this period, a gradual rise of two to three degrees Celsius is anticipated, potentially intensifying heat conditions. From April 22, heatwave alerts have been issued for various parts of Madhya Pradesh, including neighboring districts of Dhar, Jhabua, Ratlam, and Alirajpur. These alerts signal potentially dangerous heat conditions that residents should monitor closely.
