Indore Municipal Corporation Initiates Rs 1.40 Crore Pond Rejuvenation for Rainwater Harvesting
Indore Launches Rs 1.40 Crore Pond Rejuvenation for Rainwater Harvesting

Indore: Ahead of the monsoon season, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has initiated efforts to maximize natural rainwater harvesting through pond rejuvenation and scaling up infrastructure to recycle treated sewage water for secondary uses. A comprehensive restoration project costing Rs 1.40 crore is underway at Kanadia pond in the Sanwer constituency.

Project Details and Progress

IMC commissioner Kshitij Singhal reviewed the progress of several key operations on Sunday, aimed at expanding the pond’s water-holding capacity before the arrival of rains. He stated that the IMC is working to deepen the pond bed and remove blockages from natural inflow channels to ensure unobstructed rainwater harvesting. Additionally, the civic body is undertaking bund pitching, laying inlet and outlet pipelines, and setting up chain-link fencing. Entrance gates, pathways, and green belts are also being developed along the perimeter.

Sewage Treatment Plant Expansion

The IMC is also accelerating the construction of high-capacity sewage treatment plants (STPs) under the Amrit Project 2.0. These STPs will channel recycled water for various purposes. Commissioner Singhal emphasized that this recycled supply will directly serve urban gardening, public parks, and commercial construction projects, significantly relieving the burden on the city’s fresh groundwater table.

These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to enhance water sustainability in Indore, reducing dependence on groundwater and promoting the use of recycled water for non-potable applications. The corporation aims to complete the pond rejuvenation before the monsoon to maximize rainwater capture.
