Cold conditions tightened their hold on Indore as northerly winds pushed temperatures down significantly, with dense fog enveloping the city on Wednesday morning. This severe weather disruption severely impacted routine life across the urban landscape.
Visibility Plummets, Creating Hazardous Driving Conditions
Visibility dropped sharply across major roads and thoroughfares, making driving particularly hazardous and substantially raising the risk of accidents throughout the day. In several critical stretches, vehicles were barely visible to commuters, forcing them to slow down considerably during peak morning and evening hours.
Cloud cover persisted through the entire day, effectively blocking direct sunshine and keeping the air consistently chilly. By evening, the wind turned sharper and more biting, adding to the uncomfortable cold feel in the atmosphere. Residents reported feeling a marked and pronounced chill during the early morning hours, with many struggling to cope with the sudden temperature drop.
Official Temperature Readings and Wind Patterns
Meteorological officials confirmed that Indore recorded a maximum temperature of 28 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature stood at 14 degrees Celsius. This minimum reading was noted to be three degrees above the normal expected range for this time of year.
Winds continued to blow consistently from the north and northeast directions, with speeds reaching up to 22 kilometres per hour throughout the day. This persistent wind pattern contributed significantly to the cooling effect experienced across the city.
Connection to Himalayan Snowfall and Regional Impact
Weather scientists explained that this current cold spell is directly linked to recent snowfall in the Himalayan region of north India. Chilled air descending from the mountains is now actively influencing weather patterns across central India, leading to a fresh and noticeable drop in temperatures specifically in Indore and nearby districts.
Similar weather conditions, including cold winds and morning fog, are expected to persist over the next one to two days according to meteorological predictions. The dense fog was not limited to just the urban areas of Indore.
Rural Areas Affected and Statewide Cold Conditions
Rural belts surrounding the city, including Depalpur, Gautampura, Betma, and Sanwer, also recorded heavy fog that significantly affected movement and transportation in interior areas. Across Madhya Pradesh, Rajgarh emerged as the coldest location in the state, logging a minimum temperature of 8.8 degrees Celsius.
The combination of low temperatures, reduced visibility, and chilly winds has created challenging conditions for residents, commuters, and daily activities throughout the region.
