IMD Issues Heatwave Alert as Temperatures Set to Soar in Northwest India
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced that maximum temperatures across northwest India are projected to increase gradually by 2–4°C over the upcoming week. This significant rise is anticipated to impact several states, including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh, starting from April 20.
Heatwave Conditions Expected Across Multiple Regions
According to the IMD advisory, intense heatwave conditions are likely to prevail in various parts of northwest, central, and east India in the coming days. The department has issued specific warnings for the following areas:
- East Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, and East Madhya Pradesh from April 20 to 23.
- Jharkhand on April 20 and 21.
- West Uttar Pradesh from April 20 to 22.
- West Rajasthan from April 20 to 23.
- Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh over the same period.
Additionally, isolated pockets of West Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Vidarbha may experience heatwave conditions on April 20. Odisha is also expected to be affected between April 21 and 23.
Current Weather Status and Air Quality
As of Monday morning, Delhi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 198, indicating moderate pollution levels. In Chhattisgarh, a heat wave-like situation continues, with temperatures in Raipur exceeding 43°C, leading to intense heat stress across the state. The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Central Chhattisgarh due to these rising temperatures.
Meteorologist Dr. Gayatri Vani noted that the region has seen a notable increase in temperature over the past week, and these conditions are likely to persist for the next few days. She cautioned residents to take necessary precautions.
Hot and Humid Conditions in Southern and Eastern States
The IMD has forecast hot and humid conditions in several other regions:
- Kerala, Tamil Nadu, coastal Karnataka, and Gangetic West Bengal until April 25.
- Odisha from April 18 to 23.
- Gangetic West Bengal from April 19 to 23.
- Coastal Karnataka and Tamil Nadu from April 18 to 21.
- Kerala, Mahe, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Yanam from April 18 to 19.
Warm night conditions are also expected in isolated parts of Odisha between April 18 and 20, prompting advisories to avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat.
Potential Relief from Western Disturbance
Weather experts predict some respite from the heat with a fresh western disturbance expected to affect the region from April 23. This may bring slight temperature dips and provide relief from the intense conditions.
Earlier, the IMD indicated that parts of northwest India, including Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, might witness rainfall, snowfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds, with hailstorms possible in some areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Safety Precautions and Advisory
Authorities have urged residents in affected states to follow safety guidelines during the heatwave. This includes staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and taking measures to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary to ensure public safety amid these challenging weather conditions.
