IMD Issues Heatwave Alert for Rayalaseema Region in Andhra Pradesh
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially issued a heatwave alert for specific parts of the Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh, effective from April 15 to April 18. This warning comes alongside predictions of a gradual but steady increase in maximum temperatures across the entire state over the next several days, raising significant public health concerns.
Scorching Temperatures Grip Andhra Pradesh
The Rayalaseema region is currently experiencing intensely high temperatures, with mercury levels exceeding 43 degrees Celsius in several areas as recorded on Tuesday, April 14. Simultaneously, the coastal Andhra Pradesh (CAP) region reported conditions characterized by both high temperatures and elevated relative humidity, contributing to considerable discomfort for residents.
Anantapur in Rayalaseema was identified as the hottest location in the state on Tuesday, registering a maximum temperature of 43.1°C. It was closely followed by other key locations:
- Kurnool: 42.5°C
- Kadapa: 42°C
- Nandyal: 41.2°C
- Tirupati: 40.4°C
In the Coastal Andhra Pradesh region, Jangamaheswarapram in Palnadu district recorded 41°C. Other areas like Nandigama, Gannavaram, and Amaravati saw temperatures around 39.2°C. Most remaining parts of Andhra Pradesh experienced maximum temperatures ranging between 34°C and 38°C. The lowest maximum temperature recorded statewide was 32.7°C in Kalingapatnam, located in the Srikakulam district.
Forecast and Extended Weather Advisory
According to IMD officials, hot and humid weather conditions are likely to persist at isolated places over the Coastal Andhra Pradesh region from April 15 to April 20. The forecast indicates that maximum temperatures across parts of the state are expected to rise by an additional 2°C to 3°C over the next three days, intensifying the heatwave scenario.
Weather authorities have confirmed that no significant rainfall is anticipated in Andhra Pradesh for the upcoming week. This prolonged dry spell, combined with the escalating heat and humidity, is expected to cause widespread discomfort among the population. In response, health authorities have issued a critical advisory, urging residents to exercise extreme caution to prevent sunstroke and other heat-related illnesses.
Long-Term Climate Outlook
Looking ahead to the broader monsoon season, most parts of Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh are projected to receive below-normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon period from June to September in 2026. This prediction is linked to the growing risk associated with the El Niño phenomenon, which could further exacerbate dry and hot conditions in the region.
The combination of immediate heatwave alerts and long-term climatic forecasts underscores the urgent need for preparedness and public awareness to mitigate health risks during this period of extreme weather in Andhra Pradesh.
