Hyderabad Groundwater Levels Drop Alarmingly Ahead of Summer

Hyderabad: Groundwater levels in several parts of Hyderabad have dropped alarmingly, well ahead of peak summer, with water tables plunging to depths of over 60 feet in many areas.

According to data from the Telangana groundwater department, areas such as SR Nagar, Kukatpally and Qutbullahpur have witnessed sharp depletion. In Quthbullapur, groundwater levels have reached nearly 28 metres below ground level (around 91 feet), indicating severe stress on underground water reserves.

Official figures show that during March, groundwater levels up to the ORR ranged from a shallow 1.68 metres below ground level at Bahadurpura to as deep as 28.01 metres in Quthbullapur. The average groundwater level across the region stood at 10.10 metres below ground level.

This sharp decline comes despite favourable rainfall conditions. Out of 46 mandals in the region, 37 recorded excess rainfall, ranging between 20% and 72% above normal, while the remaining nine mandals received normal rainfall.

However, officials noted that groundwater levels fell by an average of 0.85 metres in March 2026 compared to February 2026. At the same time, there has been a marginal rise of 1.51 metres when compared to March 2025 levels, they said.
