Hassan Forest Division Deploys Innovative Dog Squad to Mitigate Human-Elephant Conflict

In a significant move to address escalating human-elephant conflicts, the forest department in Hassan has officially launched the Elephant Anti-Depredation Dog Squad (EaDDS). This pioneering initiative, developed by the conservation organization A Rocha India, utilizes specially trained Belgian Malinois dogs to enhance early warning systems and tracking capabilities for wild elephants. The system was successfully employed for the first time on April 18, leading to the rescue of an elephant, as confirmed by Hassan deputy conservator of forests Saurabh Kumar.

Science-Based Approach to Conservation

According to officials, EaDDS represents a science-based, collaborative conservation effort that integrates trained canine units with government-led field operations. The primary objective is to foster safer coexistence between people and elephants in Karnataka, where human-elephant conflicts have been on the rise. Originally developed in Bannerghatta, the initiative aims to tackle this pressing issue through innovative methods.

Operational Details and Future Goals

The dogs work in tandem with forest personnel during patrols and conflict-response operations, providing real-time detection and tracking support. Currently deployed on a pilot basis in the Hassan Forest Division, the project operates under the guidance of the additional principal chief conservator of forests (Project Elephant). The long-term vision is to integrate this system into standard forest department operations across the region.
