Gurgaon continued to grapple with extreme heat on Sunday as maximum temperatures soared past 42 degrees Celsius at multiple locations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to persist across Haryana until May 27.
Temperature Readings Across Gurgaon
According to the IMD's Chandigarh centre, the Gurgaon Automatic Weather Station (AWS) recorded a maximum temperature of 41.7 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Gurgaon KVK station logged 42.3 degrees Celsius, and the NorthCap University station recorded 43.1 degrees Celsius, one of the highest readings in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Night temperatures also remained elevated. The Gurgaon KVK station recorded a minimum temperature of 27.5 degrees Celsius, while the NorthCap University station registered 26.7 degrees Celsius.
Statewide Heatwave Conditions
The weather department reported that Haryana's average maximum temperature increased by 1.7 degrees Celsius compared to Saturday and remained 2.5 degrees Celsius above normal. Sirsa was the hottest place in the state, recording 46 degrees Celsius, followed by Rohtak at 45.3 degrees Celsius and Bopani in Faridabad at 44.8 degrees Celsius.
Neighbouring districts also experienced high temperatures on Sunday. Nuh logged 43.5 degrees Celsius, Jhajjar 42.3 degrees Celsius, Mahendragarh 42.5 degrees Celsius, and Karnal 42.8 degrees Celsius.
Forecast and Expected Relief
The IMD has forecast a further rise of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius in maximum temperatures over the next four days. However, a fresh western disturbance expected from May 28 may lead to a dip of 3 to 5 degrees Celsius next week.
The weather department has predicted heatwave to severe heatwave conditions at isolated places in Haryana between May 25 and May 27. Thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms, and gusty winds with speeds of 40 to 50 kmph are likely at some places on May 28, 29, and 30. This is expected to provide some relief from the prolonged heat spell.
Expert Insights
Private weather forecaster Navdeep Dahiya also stated that heatwave conditions are likely to continue across Delhi-NCR and Haryana until May 28, with daytime temperatures expected to remain between 43 degrees Celsius and 46 degrees Celsius.
