Gurgaon Residents Wake Up to Chilly, Rainy Morning with Commute Disruptions

Residents across Gurgaon woke up to an overcast sky, gusty winds, and a distinct chill in the air on Thursday morning, following rainfall recorded across several parts of the district over the past 24 hours. The weather shift brought a noticeable drop in temperatures and created challenges for the morning commute.

Temperature Drop and Rainfall Data

The minimum temperature in Gurgaon stood at 18.3 degrees Celsius, which was marginally higher than the 17.4 degrees Celsius recorded a day earlier. However, a persistent cloud cover and strong winds made the morning feel significantly colder than the thermometer indicated. The maximum temperature reached only 24.7 degrees Celsius, marking a substantial drop of 7.2 notches compared to the previous day.

According to detailed tehsil- and sub-tehsil-wise rainfall data recorded between 8 am on March 18 and 8 am on March 19, the district received an average rainfall of approximately 6.6 mm. There were wide variations in rainfall amounts across different regions. Sohna recorded the highest rainfall at 16 mm, followed closely by Pataudi with 11 mm. Gurgaon tehsil and Wazirabad each received 7 mm of rain, while the sub-tehsils of Kadipur and Harsaru logged 5 mm each. Manesar recorded 4 mm, and Badshahpur and Farukh Nagar received only 2 mm each.

Commute Disruptions and Weather Forecast

The rain and associated weather conditions disrupted the morning commute in various parts of the city. Traffic moved at a crawl in many areas, with water accumulating at several low-lying stretches and reduced visibility adding to the challenges for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Weather officials have indicated that the cloud cover is likely to persist through Friday, with the possibility of light showers in isolated pockets. Rain is expected to keep daytime temperatures under check over the next couple of days, maintaining the cooler conditions.

IMD Warning and Expert Analysis

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for Haryana for March 19 and 20. The forecast predicts thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph across several districts. The department has also warned of potential hailstorms at isolated places during this period.

Weather expert Navdeep Dahiya explained that a western disturbance is currently influencing weather conditions across northwest India. "Cloud cover is prevailing across northwest India, with intermittent drizzles over Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. More rain is likely on Friday, with daytime temperatures dropping to 18–23°C," he stated.

Safety Precautions and Public Response

Officials have advised residents to remain alert during thunderstorm activity and take necessary precautions. Recommendations include:

  • Avoiding open areas during lightning strikes
  • Parking vehicles away from trees or weak structures
  • Taking precautions against strong winds and possible hail

While many residents welcomed the change in weather from the usual warmer conditions, numerous people chose to remain indoors amid the windy conditions and unusually cool start to the day. The weather shift has brought both relief from heat and temporary inconveniences to daily routines.
