Gurgaon Shivers Under Dense Fog Blanket as Mercury Plummets to 8°C

Residents of Gurgaon woke up to a bitterly cold and fog-choked Wednesday morning, with the city experiencing significant disruptions due to severe weather conditions. The minimum temperature dipped to a chilly 8°C, while very dense fog reduced visibility to below 50 metres across several parts of the urban area.

Widespread Disruption to Transportation Networks

The thick fog blanket caused substantial problems during peak morning hours, significantly affecting daily commutes and travel schedules. Traffic movement was severely hampered as drivers struggled with poor visibility conditions, leading to congestion and delays on major roads and highways. The aviation and railway sectors were not spared either, with multiple flights and trains experiencing delays due to the challenging weather situation that persisted well into mid-morning.

Commuters reported that poor visibility conditions continued even after sunrise, with fog lingering particularly in low-lying pockets of the city. This extended period of reduced visibility created hazardous driving conditions and complicated morning routines for thousands of residents trying to reach their workplaces and schools.

Temperature Patterns Across Haryana Region

Data released by the India Meteorological Department revealed interesting temperature patterns across the state. Haryana's average minimum temperature fell by approximately 1.1°C compared to Tuesday's readings, though officials noted that these temperatures remained near normal for this time of year. Gurgaon's recorded minimum of 8°C was part of a broader cooling trend across the region.

The coldest location in Haryana was Hisar, which recorded a minimum temperature of just 4.3°C. Other weather stations across the state reported varying minimum temperatures: 7.5°C in Karnal, 8.6°C in Rohtak, 9.7°C in Faridabad, 7.4°C in Chandigarh, and 9.8°C in Ambala.

Regional Weather Phenomenon and Daytime Recovery

Meteorological experts explained that the dense fog over Gurgaon was not an isolated incident but rather part of a wider belt of low clouds and fog affecting substantial portions of north and central India. This weather system created similar challenging conditions across multiple states in the region.

While mornings remained bitterly cold, there was some relief as daytime progressed. IMD data indicated that Haryana's average maximum temperature actually rose by 0.8°C on Wednesday, remaining near normal seasonal expectations. Gurgaon recorded a daytime high of 20.7°C, while Faridabad emerged as the warmest location in the state with a maximum temperature of 23.6°C.

Maximum temperatures at other monitoring stations across Haryana included:

  • 22.5°C in Bhiwani
  • 22.1°C in Chandigarh
  • 21.4°C in Hisar
  • 21°C in Karnal
  • 20.5°C in Rohtak

The contrasting conditions between morning chill and afternoon warmth created a distinctive weather pattern that affected various aspects of daily life, from transportation to outdoor activities and energy consumption patterns across the affected regions.
