Goa Records Light Rainfall and Wind Damage in Sattari Region
Light rainfall was observed at isolated locations across Goa on Thursday, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Sattari taluka, in particular, experienced gusty winds late Wednesday night, causing significant damage to horticulture crops in villages such as Surungule and Shirsode.
Impact of Gusty Winds on Infrastructure and Agriculture
The high-velocity winds led to the roofs of several houses being blown off, although fortunately, no casualties were reported. In addition to the structural damage, the taluka faced disruptions in power supply, with some areas affected for extended periods. Internal roads were blocked by uprooted trees, which fire and emergency services personnel worked to clear during the first half of Thursday.
Temperatures Remain Elevated Despite Rainfall
Despite the light showers, there was no significant drop in temperatures, with conditions continuing to remain above normal. According to IMD observations on Thursday, Panaji recorded a maximum temperature of 35.4°C, which is 2.8°C above normal, and a minimum of 25°C, 1.1°C above normal. In Mormugao, the maximum temperature was 33.6°C (1.3°C above normal), while the minimum stood at 25.2°C (0.6°C above normal). Humidity levels were noted at 61% in Panaji and 83% in Mormugao.
Weather Forecast for the Coming Days
The IMD has forecast partly cloudy skies with haze during the mornings over the next 48 hours. Maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to hover around 33°C and 24°C respectively over the next 24 hours. The department indicates that dry and mainly sunny weather conditions are likely to prevail across Goa until March 31, suggesting that the brief rainfall may offer only temporary relief from the prevailing heat.
