Tragic Elephant Attack in Jamshedpur Village Claims Man's Life
A 55-year-old man was tragically trampled to death by an elephant in the early hours of Saturday at Saparup village, located under the Chandil forest range in Seraikela-Kharsawan district, according to police reports. The deceased has been identified as Radha Tantubai, a resident of the area.
Details of the Fatal Incident
Police officials stated that Tantubai was heading towards a field to answer nature's call when he encountered the elephant, which had strayed into the village from the foothills of Dalma. The elephant, described as one from a herd of six that had been wandering in the vicinity since early morning, suddenly appeared before him.
In a desperate attempt to escape, Tantubai tried to run away, but the elephant caught him with its trunk, flung him into the air, and then trampled him to death after he fell to the ground. The attack occurred swiftly, leaving little chance for survival.
Villagers' Response and Police Action
Upon hearing Tantubai's screams, local villagers rushed to the scene. They managed to drive the elephant back into the forest by creating loud noises and beating utensils, a common tactic used in such situations to scare away wildlife. The police were alerted and promptly arrived at the location.
The body of Radha Tantubai was sent to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death. Tiruldih police station officer in-charge, Kaushal Kumar, confirmed that the elephant had separated from its herd and strayed into the fields before attacking Tantubai.
Compensation and Ongoing Human-Elephant Conflict
A forest officer disclosed that a compensation of Rs 50,000 has been provided to the bereaved family to assist with conducting the last rites. This incident underscores a larger issue of human-elephant conflict in the Chandil forest range, which has been escalating over the past two weeks.
Elephants have been causing significant havoc in the area, damaging houses, destroying crops, and consuming grains stockpiled in two adjoining villages, Gunda and Detar Vanghar. Milan Mahato of Vanghar reported, "Elephant raided our house besides three others in the village, damaged the front portion of the thatched houses and also damaged standing crop."
History of Similar Attacks in the Region
This is not an isolated incident. On December 28, 2025, a 50-year-old man was killed in an elephant attack under the Kukru police station limits within the Chandil range. Additionally, on October 17 of the previous year, a 34-year-old villager lost his life in a similar elephant attack under the Chandil police station limits.
The recurring nature of these attacks highlights the urgent need for effective measures to mitigate human-elephant conflicts in this region, ensuring both wildlife conservation and human safety.
