Sniffer Dog Solves Nilgai Poaching Case in Chhattisgarh Within an Hour
A trained sniffer dog played a crucial role in cracking an illegal nilgai poaching case in Chhattisgarh's Dhamtari forest division, leading to the arrest of six individuals. The incident occurred in the Keregaon reserve forest, where forest officials swiftly acted on the canine's tracking abilities to apprehend the suspects.
Discovery of the Poached Nilgai
On the morning of March 22, a patrolling team of forest guards discovered the carcass of a male nilgai in compartment number 121 of the Bansikhai beat. The animal, estimated to be three to four years old, showed clear signs of poaching with three arrow injuries on its neck, abdomen, and hind portion. This grim find prompted immediate action from the forest department to track down the perpetrators.
Canine Tracking Leads to Breakthrough
To aid in the investigation, a dog squad from the neighboring Udanti Sitanadi Tiger Reserve was called to the scene. The trained dog picked up the scent from one of the arrows used in the attack and followed it directly to the house of a suspect in Dokal village. This remarkable tracking effort enabled officials to identify and zero in on the key accused within just an hour of the discovery.

Based on evidence gathered during the inquiry, a villager named Mannu was identified as the primary accused in the nilgai poaching case. His arrest led to the further apprehension of six accomplices, all of whom were involved in the illegal activity. The divisional forest officer emphasized that the department has intensified surveillance against wildlife poaching and forest crimes through its flying squad, strike force, and local intelligence network.
