Delhi Weather Update: Western Disturbance Brings Relief, More Rain Expected
The national capital experienced a welcome change in weather conditions on Tuesday, with overcast skies, gusty winds, and light rainfall providing some evening relief from the prevailing heat. This weather shift occurred under the influence of a western disturbance affecting the region.
Temperature Fluctuations and Rainfall Data
Safdarjung, which serves as Delhi's primary weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 33.7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday. This reading was approximately one degree above the normal range for this time of year, yet it represented a noticeable drop from Monday's peak of 35.1 degrees Celsius.
Rainfall measurements collected until 5:30 PM on Tuesday revealed varying precipitation across different monitoring stations:
- Safdarjung: 2.1 mm
- Palam: 2.6 mm
- Lodhi Road: 2.8 mm
- Ridge: 2.4 mm
- Ayanagar: 2.2 mm
India Meteorological Department Forecast
According to officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), weather conditions are expected to undergo further changes in the coming days. Skies are likely to remain fairly clear over the next two days, with temperatures rising gradually and potentially reaching approximately 37 degrees Celsius by Thursday.
"A new western disturbance will start influencing northwest India from April 2," explained an IMD official. "On April 3 and 4, we can expect scattered light rain in Delhi-NCR. Overcast skies and rainfall will lead to a fall in temperatures after a brief rise on Wednesday and Thursday."
This pattern suggests that residents should prepare for temperature fluctuations, with a brief warming period followed by cooler conditions as the new weather system arrives.
March Weather Recap and April Outlook
The month of March concluded with notable weather statistics. Safdarjung recorded 20 mm of rainfall during the month, exceeding the long-period average of 17.4 mm for March. Despite this above-average precipitation and a relatively cooler end to the month, March 2024 emerged as the warmest March in four years.
The average maximum temperature for March reached 32.6 degrees Celsius, marking the highest reading since 2022 when it was recorded at 33.4 degrees Celsius.
Looking ahead to April, weather experts anticipate a cooler beginning to the month. "We can expect April to begin on a cooler note as well," said Mahesh Palawat, vice-president of Skymet. "Two more western disturbances are approaching — from April 2 to 4 and again from April 6 to 9 — which will bring cloudiness and rain, keeping maximum temperatures in check."
Air Quality Improvement
The weather changes also brought positive effects on air quality. Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) registered at 171 on Tuesday, showing improvement from the previous day's reading of 180. Both measurements fall within the 'moderate' category according to air quality standards, indicating that the rainfall and wind patterns contributed to better air conditions in the capital.
As Delhi transitions between weather systems, residents can expect continued variability in temperature and precipitation patterns throughout the first week of April, with western disturbances playing a significant role in shaping the capital's spring weather conditions.
